Bleeding Gums Should Be Taken Seriously

PeriodontitisIf your gums bleed more than rarely when you brush your teeth, you should take it seriously and have a dentist examine them.  Bleeding can be a sign not just of gum disease, but even more serious disorders or vitamin deficiencies.

We’re not saying this to alarm you, but to encourage you to have the issue checked before a problem gets serious.  Bleeding gums are most often a symptom of gingivitis, or gum inflammation.  Gingivitis is typically caused by plaque, which irritates the gums.  This is the reason that having your teeth cleaned by your dentist on a regular basis is so important.  If not removed, plaque can harden into tartar, which can lead to periodontitis, inflammation and infection of the tendons and bones that support the teeth.

This is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.

In periodontitis, plaque and tartar accumulate around the teeth.  The gums can swell and trap pockets of plaque and tartar, which can cause the bone to deteriorate and create infection.  This can cause an abscess, further causing the bone to deteriorate.

If you’ve experienced bleeding gums, or if your gums are tender or swollen, call Charlotte Dentistry and schedule an examination.  Caught early enough, gingivitis and periodontitis can be successfully treated, but if ignored, they can lead to serious–and costly–problems later on.

Bring your whole family to one convenient location for all their dental needs.
