Should You Consider Sealants?

We often get questions about dental sealants, especially for children’s and teenagers’ teeth.

In many instances, sealants can offer significant benefits.

Happy little pirateA sealant is a plastic resin applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—premolars and molars. The resin fills in the grooves and crevasses of the teeth, and forms a barrier to protect the teeth from plaque and acids that can cause cavities.

This is important for two reasons.  The barrier obviously protects the teeth, especially during early formative years.  But by filling in the depressions in a tooth, the sealant actually makes brushing more efficient, since toothbrush bristles can’t reach all the way into the grooves to remove food and plaque.  For children, who are still learning to brush properly (or who don’t give brushing the attention that they should) sealants can provide valuable extra protection.

Sealants are easy to apply, and only take a few minutes for each tooth.  First, the teeth are cleaned thoroughly, then slightly roughed using a solution that helps the sealant bond.  The sealant is coated onto the tooth surface, where it hardens, providing a protective extra layer.  The procedure can be done as part of a regular cleaning.

Sealants typically hold up well during normal chewing and can last for several years.  When the sealant becomes worn, it can easily be reapplied.

And sealants aren’t just for children.  Adults can benefit too.

To see if a sealant treatment is right for you or a family member, schedule an appointment at Charlotte Dentistry, or ask during your next cleaning.  A sealant treatment can be an easy, inexpensive way to protect teeth for a long time.
