How An Implant Can Restore Your Smile

Bocca denti donnaHave you lost a tooth (or teeth) and are looking for the best approach for replacement?  We suggest that you take a close look at dental implants.

A dental implant is a way of replacing a tooth by implanting a root-like anchor in the bone.  A prosthetic tooth is then attached to the anchor.  The replacement tooth or teeth look real and produce a natural-looking smile.  The implant also can restore the ability to chew and even speak properly.

Implants have been used in modern dentistry for more than 50 years with high success rates.  Interestingly, archeologists have found evidence that the Mayans even had an early form of implant—using shells embedded in the jawbone to replace missing teeth.

The implant process requires a surgical procedure to install the titanium “root” into the jaw.  First, the implant is inserted in the jaw, and allowed to fuse with the bone, a process called “osseointegration.”  The implant is covered during this time.  Then, in a second step, the dentist attaches an extension, called a post, to the implant.  A crown is then attached to the post, completing the process.

Dental implants can work for young and old, and can be a remedy for a variety of problems.

The implant procedure takes time, but it produces a lasting solution to a missing tooth, and can be a preferred choice for many patients over dentures.  Interested in options for your missing teeth? Charlotte Dentistry is a good resource for dental information.
