Safe Comfort: How We Use Anesthesia And Sedation

Female assisitant giving gas mask to patientMany people are hesitant about visiting the dentist for fear of pain or discomfort. Charlotte Dentistry® takes great care in making sure every dental visit is as comfortable as possible, for patients of all ages.

Much of this can be done simply through the use of our state-of-the-art dental tools and procedures.  But in situations where more is required to keep the patient comfortable or relieve anxiety, our staff is carefully trained in the use of anesthesia.

For some procedures, like fillings or crowns, a local anesthetic is used to prevent pain in a specific area of your mouth during treatment by blocking the nerves that sense or transmit pain and numbing mouth tissues.  This can create a ‘fat lip” feeling for a while after your visit, but the numbness subsides within a few hours.  By blocking the nerves, we not only prevent you from feeling pain, but we help keep you relaxed so that the dentist can work efficiently and give you the best possible care.

Other anti-anxiety agents, such as nitrous oxide or sedatives may also be used to help you relax during your visit.  These may be used in conjunction with local anesthetics.  By using these agents, we can induce what is called “minimal or moderate sedation,” where you are in a relaxed state, but can respond to speech or touch so we can monitor your comfort and communicate with you as needed.

The American Dental Association has specific Guidelines for the use of anesthesia of all types, and Charlotte Dentistry® uses great care in administering them.  We’ll gather detailed information about your health, any allergies, and other information beforehand, to make sure we select the right approach for your care.

To learn more about dental anesthesia, feel free to use our “Ask the Expert” form on our website.  We’ll be happy to provide the information you need.
