Spring Into the New Season With White Teeth!

What do you notice when you first meet someone? Perhaps their eyes, hair but most often it is their SMILE.  That’s why bleaching is so popular, especially during the spring and summer months.  Spring is one of the busiest times of the year with proms, graduations, weddings and vacations taking up most of your days. You want your teeth sparkling and white.  Years ago only your dentist could whiten your teeth.  These days’ teeth whitening or bleaching kits are available at every drug store but there are risks.  You need to know all the facts before you decide.

Dental whitening has been around since the late 1980’s.  At that time the treatment was one in your dentist’s office, there were no at-home treatments.  Basically, your dentist will apply a gel containing a solution with hydrogen peroxide in it to your teeth and then cure it.  Curing is the process of applying a LED curing light to the solution for a short amount of time.  Depending on your habits, the procedure is usually repeated every six months to maintain the brightness.

The problem is most people don’t want to go to the dentist for the treatments for 2 reasons: cost and time.  It takes time to bleach your teeth, and who wants to spend a sunny day in the dentist’s office?  Also, the procedure is cosmetic, so it is usually not covered by insurance and can cost you about $750 to $1000 on average.  These factors make at-home bleaching very appealing.

If you are thinking of bleaching your teeth, there are several different products available, depending on your needs.  There are no fuss products like whitening pens: just apply and go. Bleaching trays and gels are another option. Just fill the tray with gel and wear as directions instruct. There are even complete home bleaching systems for those who bleach their teeth frequently.

Some at home bleaching products are good. As great as that sounds, bleaching teeth yourself is risky, so bleaching teeth in-office is the smarter option. Sensitivity is usually an issue with at home kits. These products can irritate gums and damage existing dental work. As simple as these treatments may seem, improper use can create issues costing more money in the long run.  Also, some stains just don’t respond to bleaching, so save your money – have a dentist evaluate first.
