Trees For The Earth

“Trees For The Earth” is the theme for Earth Day 2016.

The Earth Day movement, was started in the 1970′s by John McConnell, a Christian and Peace Activist. He based this passion on bible passages such as Psalm 115:16, “The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth has been given to the children of men”. Mr McConnell believed humans have an obligation to take care of the earth, and to share its resources fairly.  Earth Day has since seen billions take part in planting trees, cleaning up local neighborhoods, and pushing government officials to enact more progressive environmental laws.Over the next five years, as Earth Day moves closer to its 50th anniversary in 2020, they are calling for the planting of 7.8 billion trees and they need our help.

Trees are a great choice for this year’s theme because they help combat climate change.

They absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In fact, in a single year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 26,000 miles.Trees help us breathe clean air.

They absorb odors and pollutant gases and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark.

Trees help provide food, energy and income to our communities. Studies have shown that schools with tree cover have reduced asthma and lung disease rates.

So join us this Friday April 22, 2016, as we celebrate our earthly home.
