Staycation

Growing up, my family could not afford elaborate vacations; our family was rich, just in a different way. My Grandmother (bless her heart) was the best at staycations. I never felt I ever missed out on anything; she always made our time together fun and special. Some of our “staycation” talent shows are famous or should I say infamous.

Here are some ideas to help make your family “Staycation” fun.

Ditch your regular routine. Unplug your electronic devices. Don’t do laundry, housework, or home projects. Remember this is a vacation; you’re just staying at home.

Know your budget.

With that in mind, plan a big event to top off the week. This will give the family something to look forward to. Maybe a trip to a local amusement park, water park, or zoo.

Have an event scheduled for each day, but be flexible.

Let the family’s cook have a break, if possible eat out 1 meal a day. If that’s not in the budget, make it fun, take turns preparing the meals, pack a picnic, eat outside or at a park, do a themed costume dinner party. Eat dessert first. Have breakfast for dinner.

Plan a “field day” with the family. Have a water balloon catching contest, sack race, a pie or watermelon eating contest.

Have a family talent show.

Have a board game tournament

Movie night with popcorn.

Camp out, in the backyard or the living room it does not matter, just do it together. Make s’mores, if you don’t have a fire pit, use a grill or microwave.

Fly a kite, ride a bike or take a hike.

Put Dairy Queen to shame and make your own sundaes, don’t forget the whipped cream and cherry on top.

Here are some area attractions that your family might enjoy:
