Child Safety, Now Why Didn’t I Think of That?

A recent trip to Carowinds with my 6-year-old grandchild really opened my eyes about keeping children safe in a crowd. If we had become separated, I would have panicked. Having a death grip on her hand, holding my breath and lots of prayers was my game plan. I need to go back to scouting 101, be prepared!

I saw a safety tip on Facebook after my Carowinds outing and thought it was brilliant. Why didn’t I think of that? Then again this morning on Good Morning America, I saw the same tip and wanted to share what I learned about keeping a child safe in a crowd.

Use a sharpie to write your phone number on your child’s arm, then cover the number with liquid band-aid to water proof the information. The marker will wear off in a few days.

If possible, everyone in your group should wear the same color shirt. This will help you see each other in a crowd. If you are not dressed alike, play a game with young children, ask them to close their eyes and tell you what color shirt you are wearing. If you get separated this could help your child identify you in a crowd.

Take a group picture before you start your adventure. If you get separated this will help others know exactly who they are looking for.

Take a minute and have a game plan.

Who do you want your child to ask for help? Show your child how to identify an employee of the venue. If they can’t find one, teach your child to look for a mother with children to ask for help.

Have a meeting place, or stay put? Decide before you divide and ride.

Never have your meeting place in the parking lot or at the front entrance of the venue.

Stress to your children never to leave the venue with a stranger.

Use glow-stick bracelets or glow necklaces to help keep an eye on your child after dark.

If you are staying at a hotel, put one of their business cards on each child.

Keeping up with my beautiful, energetic granddaughter could be a new Olympic event. Next time the two of us head out to Carowinds, I’ll be prepared.

Bring your whole family to one convenient location for all their dental needs.
