Vitamins and Supplements

As we start a New Year the #1 resolution seems to be getting healthy.

Eat better, sleep longer, drink more water and work out regularly.

You may have included taking some vitamins and supplements.

It’s important to not overdo it. This is very true when it comes to vitamins. Some people may think since these are over the counter drugs, more is better, Not true.

Herbal medications are made from natural chemicals taken out of a plant, refined, then concentrated and added back to make the extract more potent. Herbal supplements are not regulated by the Food and Drug Agency (FDA).

Taking high doses of vitamins, especially vitamin C before dental treatment could weaken the effects of the anesthesia. Likewise, some calming supplements, such as Kava Kava or St. John’s Wort, can strengthen the effects of anesthesia.

Ginkgo biloba and vitamin E can be dangerous when taken with aspirin because they each can act as blood thinners. The combination may cause difficulties in blood clotting, which could be serious for patients undergoing dental surgery.

Always provide your dental/medical provider with a complete medical history, including any herbal supplements and conventional drugs you are taking. Bring an updated list or the actual medications to your appointments.
