Little Free Library

I guess I’m a little behind the times. It wasn’t till recently I’ve noticed a lot of Little Library boxes popping up all over downtown Belmont. I thought it was a really cool idea and I just assumed the local library was doing it as some type of outreach program.

Come to find out, this Little Free Library (LFL) movement was started back in 2009 by a gentleman named Todd Bol from Hudson, Wisconsin. Todd was looking for a way to pay tribute to his late mother, a school teacher who loved to read. The first LFL he built was made to look like a one-room school house. He placed the LFL on a post in his front yard with a sign stating the books were free “take one- leave one”. His tribute soon turned into a nationwide movement. There are over 40,000 registered LFL in all 50 states and in 70 countries. North Carolina has over 500 alone. Todd’s story reminds me of a story my Pastor shared at church, many years ago, “The starfish story- you can make a difference”. It’s worth reading if you are not familiar with the story.

The Little Free Library organization describes the people who build the boxes as “stewards”, not owners since they are meant for everyone to share. These stewards know how important reading is and have a passion for sharing that love with others. They make sure their LFL is stocked with a variety of good reading material. The LFL box designs can be as different as the Carolinas’ landscape. Each box seems to be unique, and really reflects the personality and story of the builder or the local area. Some of these boxes are true works of art. Take a look on the LFL website at this awesome The Little Free Library #35169 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
