Got The Blues

The Christmas decorations are packed away for another year and the joy of the holidays has faded into a beautiful memory, and now winter has me as its captive audience. Okay that’s really a strong term but come January, I get the winter blues or as I used to call it “cabin fever”. I drive to work in the dark and I drive home in the dark, By 8:00 pm I’m headed to bed out of sheer boredom. Oh my goodness, will Spring ever get here?

For many people it’s more than just the winter blues, SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons. If you’re like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months; sapping your energy and making you feel moody.

Treatment for SAD may include light therapy (phototherapy), psychotherapy and medications.


Don’t dismiss those annual feeling as a simple case of the “winter blues” as something you have to tough out on your own. Socializing is good for your mental health and helps ward off the winter blues. Make an effort to keep in touch with people you care about. Organize a supper club, or a weekly lunch bunch, or something as simple as getting together with friends for coffee.

Keeping your mind and body active with a new interest seems to ward off some symptoms of SAD.

Join a gym, learn how to knit, play bridge, or chess, learn a new language, or read that classic novel series you never have time for. Go outside as much as possible, especially during midday even if you have to bundle up. Sunshine is good for the soul, but remember, sunscreen (even in winter) is good for the skin.


Even though winter may not seem so terrific, accept the season. Winter brings a lot of fun things to do; skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, hiking, carriage rides, snowmobiling, snow tubing, making snowmen. Drinking hot chocolate by a roaring fire is not possible in the middle of the summer. Well, I guess technically they are, but it wouldn’t be as much fun. And what about basketball? No better way to count down the days till spring when UNC wins the big dance during March Madness (you’re welcome UNC).

Keep a positive attitude, set some weekly goals, plan a winter vacation, but just keep moving and the cold months will fly by. Before you know it, it will be July and 90 plus degrees, and we’ll all be dreaming of a white Christmas.
