Give Back Box

Give Back Box is the brainchild of Monika Wiela, an online shoe company executive. One day in 2011, Monika encountered a homeless man in Chicago, who was holding up a sign saying he needed a pair of shoes. Monika returned with a pair of shoes for him, but he was nowhere to be found. She spent that night thinking about what she could do to help people in need. From that encounter, Give Back Box was born. As Wiela researched further, she learned that an estimated 11 million tons of clothing, footwear, towels, bedding, drapery and other textiles end up in U.S. landfills every year, and more than 4 million tons of boxes are discarded each year. After several years of research, it was clear that Goodwill Industries International, with its more than 3,200 retail locations, was the perfect vehicle for the goals and objectives of Give Back Box.

So, how does Give Back Box works? Reuse your online shipping boxes in which you received your purchases, any cardboard box you have will do, to donate your unwanted household items. Stuff your box or boxes with gently used clothing, shoes or household items. Please donate responsively, no food or perishable item. Then go to to print your free shipping label. You can drop the box off at your nearest post office or UPS store or even schedule a home UPS pickup through this website and it will be delivered free of charge to your local Goodwill.

Goodwill uses the revenue from the sale of the donations to cover the cost of shipping, but more important they use the proceeds to help provide employment placement, job training and community-based services such as career counseling, education and mentoring. Last year, more than 2 million people worked to build their career and financial assets by engaging with Goodwill team members. Also, Goodwill recycles the boxes.

I love this idea for several reasons. I certainly believe in donating clothing and household items I no longer can use to local charities. I like the fact that the money Goodwill makes from my donations helps others get needed job training, counseling, and education. I’m also very big on recycling. All the boxes Goodwill receives are recycled. Win, win, win.

If you want a receipt for your tax-deductible donation, no problem, just include an itemized list and follow the instruction on their website. If you don’t have a way to print a label, they will mail one to you. Easy-Peasy!
