Sugarless Gum Chewing; Good or Bad? Part II

Even though there maybe some benefits there can be some drawback as well. Here are a few examples of these drawbacks.

Gastrointestinal Problems

When you chew gum, the brain receives the same signals as it would if you were chewing food. It will then respond accordingly by releasing enzymes and acids for the purpose of digesting the food. However, there will be no food to be digested, and the enzymes will have nothing to work on but the insides of your stomach. The above will lead to bloating of your stomach and may disrupt your body’s ability to digest food well. A more adverse effect may be the acids destroying the lining of your stomach and leading to stomach ulcers.

When someone chews gum, they swallow a lot of air. Excessive air in the abdomen leads to bloating and may even lead to IBS (irritable bowel syndrome in some cases. The artificial sweeteners in gum may also cause diarrhea since they are not easily digestible.

Jaw Disorders

The chances are that you enjoy chewing gum with one side of your mouth. The more you keep chewing gum with one side of the mouth, the stronger that jaw becomes. However, it will be at the expense of the other jaw. Predominantly chewing on one side may lead to temporomandibular joint disorder. The effects will be toothaches, headaches, and earaches that will get worse over time. Your face may experience irregular development if you start chewing gum from a young age since certain muscles will be more developed than others.

Unhealthy Eating Habits

When chewing gum becomes a deeply ingrained habit, whenever you cannot find gum, your go-to choice of chewing material will be junk food. One reason is the ease of access. You will desire something that is as easy to obtain and eat as chewing gum. The other reason is that the flavors in gum are the ones often put in other junk food and you will choose junk food over more nutritious options.

There are always two sides of the coin and we should be aware of these so we are well informed and make the right decision. Chewing gum can be beneficial but it can also cause harm if done in excess.
