Through with the Chew

When I first heard the term, “Through with the Chew”, I thought it was a boycott on the very popular daytime cooking show The Chew, thankfully I was wrong. “Through With the Chew Week” is observed during the week of February 19-25 and is designed to raise awareness of the harmful effects of smokeless tobacco. Smokeless tobacco is a tobacco product that is not burned and can come in many forms; chewing or spit tobacco, snuff, and dip to name a few and each are very dangerous.

The Great American Spit Out is a day during this week when smokeless tobacco users are encouraged to quit for a day and, ultimately, quit for good. Also, this week offers our schools and the community the opportunity to draw attention to the importance of educating and keeping our youth tobacco free for a lifetime.

Some people are under the misconception that smokeless tobacco is a safe alternative to cigarettes. The truth is chew products contain about the same amount of nicotine as cigarettes. They also contain at least 30 chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

According to the American Dental Association, some of the side effects from using smokeless tobacco are; gum disease, gum recession, tooth loss, tissue, and bone loss around the roots of the teeth, stained and discolored teeth, not to mention bad breath.

The Centers for disease Control and Prevention states that approximately 75 percent of all mouth, lip, tongue, nose and larynx cancer are due to smokeless tobacco use. Smokeless tobacco users just like cigarette smokers are at an increased risk of death from heart disease and stroke.

According to the American Cancer Society, people who pick a quit date to be “Through with the Chew” greatly increase the odds of succeeding. Get your calendar out, and plan on quitting on February 23rd the “Great American Spit Out” day, and then call Charlotte Dentistry to schedule a dental cleaning and a complete oral examination (because who knows spit better than your dentist?). Start your tobacco free future with a clean, healthy and fresh mouth.

Quitting tobacco use can be a very daunting process. The more information you have the more likely you are to succeed. Recruit your friends and family to help keep you motivated, supported, and accountable. It will take some hard work, but your health is worth it.
