My Journey to Better Quality of Life

by Esther Crescioni

Today is the beginning of my transformation. What transformation may you ask? The transformation of my own personal view of myself. Today, I start my Invisalign orthodontic treatment which I will be enduring for the next 12 to 18 months. For the last 37 years of my life, I have lived with a class II overbite & for many years I have been self-conscious about it. It has been lingering in the back of my mind most of my adult life, something which robbed me from the desire to smile.

As a child, it didn’t really bother me because my parents taught me to accept myself for who and how I am. I always felt confident and free to be myself around my family and neighbours…but all that changed once I started school. Children can be very cruel at times and I endured a lot of teasing in my day.   Gradually, as time went on, I simply stopped smiling for class pictures, stopped smiling back at people in the grocery store, stopped smiling at my friends. I stopped smiling.

In middle school, I was actually feared. Apparently, I have a very serious face and it seems to intimidate (or at least it’s what I’ve been told). So if you think I didn’t have many friends in middle school you’d be right, as most children were afraid to approach me. I just kept retrieving into myself more and more – reducing the amount of contact I had with people as much as I possibly could. Later on, as an adult, I started to care less about my appearance, especially when other adults around me didn’t seem to care either. My attitude started to change and I was starting to smile more but still not as often. Now, at 37, I feel pretty comfortable with myself but I still prefer not to have my picture taken but when I must, I usually don’t smile. All that is soon to be changed! (I hope!)

For the next few months, I will be posting the progress with my Invisalign treatment under the care of Dr. Watson at Charlotte Dentistry and I want to invite you to share this journey with me. I also encourage you to ask me any questions about Invisalign that you may have and I will answer truthfully and honestly based on my experience. I am very excited to be able to finally do this and I want to share my experience with you all, our valued patients!
