June is National Candy Month

Zip-a-dee-doo-dah, zip-a-dee-ay, my, oh, my, what a wonderful month? Yes, you read it right! June is National Candy Month, and I’m as happy as a kid in a candy store (pun intended)!

One of my favorite childhood memories was going to the penny candy store in Stone Harbor, NJ with 25 cents in my hand; I could spend hours picking out just the right candy combinations. Kits, Bit of Honey, wax lips, candy buttons, and pink chewing gum cigars were among some of my favorites. As I’ve matured so has my taste in confections. Gone are the days of craving root beer barrels, I have developed a more sophisticated palate and moved on to Hersey’s chocolate bar with almonds, Peanut M&M’s and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. You see I’m trying to be more health-conscious, and nuts contain the good kind of fats (let’s not argue).

Being the candy connoisseur that I am, I was thrilled to see the new Cotton Candy Factory that recently opened in downtown Belmont, NC. This candy store is owned and operated by Holy Angels and employs some of their residents. The store was designed to be a fun happy place and is very Willy Wonka-esque. In addition to being able to spin your own cotton candy, they also sell a multitude of “retro” candies sold by the pound which is very reminiscent of my childhood days. Holy Angels is a daytime and residential facility for people with varying degrees of mental, physical and developmental disabilities.

If you ever needed a reason to visit a candy store, this would be a good excuse.

Some other fun things to know about candy:

The man who invented cotton candy, William James Morrison, was a dentist and he first called it fairy floss.

Snickers, one of the most popular candy bars today, was named after a horse.

Most traditionally flavored bubble gum is pink because that was the only color dye available when it was invented.

Christmas is actually the biggest candy sales season of the year, even more than Halloween.

Red jelly beans are the favorite among children.

If you laid out all the candy corn produced in a year from end to end, you could circle the Earth more than 4 times. Oh, that’s what your suppose to do with candy corn! Now, that makes sense because I have never met anyone who actually admitted to eating them.

North Carolinas’ favorite candy, Butterfingers.

South Carolinas’ favorite candy, Candy Corn, OOPS, excuse me while I remove my foot from my mouth! Sorry SC. lol
