The Benefits of Reading

Read this and live longer, what? OK, that may be a bit of a stretch, but if you thought this was going to be another post about how diet and exercise can help you live longer, Surprise!

Bookworms rejoice, you now have another reason to smile. Reading an average of 30 minutes a day may add years to your life. If this sounds too good to be true, keep reading this post and add a few seconds to your life.

“According to Becca R. Levy, a professor of Epidemiology at Yale, reports people who read as little as a half-hour a day had a significant survival advantage over those who did not read. She also said, “The survival advantage remained after adjusting for wealth, education, cognitive ability, and many other variables.”

Not only is reading great for you, studies have also shown reading to your child can give them a head start in language and literacy skills and be better prepared for school. Spending quality time every day reading to your children teaches them reading is fun because it has become a fun relaxing habit. This is an easy way to influence them to become lifelong readers.

Dana Eure, associate director of the Lifelong Learning for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, said children who lack confidence are likely to avoid reading activities, which over time, results in loss of reading skills. She went on to say, it’s critical for children to consistently practice reading, even in the summer, when reading gaps are most common.

Studies did not indicate if reading from a book or an electronic device made a difference but with a library card, your selection of books is limitless and free. Living longer, becoming a better reader, a better thinker, more confident, and developing a rich imagination are just some of the benefits of reading. Can you hear the librarians singing?

My theory on why reading could help you live longer: reading is such a sedentary activity; staying home reading improves your odds since most accidents occur within 2 miles of home. Unless of course your reading on a treadmill (trust me, that could be very risky).
