Gum Disease and Bone Loss

Although many adults have some form of gum disease, not everyone knows they have it or what to do. Periodontal disease can occur as a simple gum inflammation, or something more serious that damages the soft tissue and bone. In the worst cases, entire teeth are lost to gum disease. Turning gum disease depends on your dental hygiene today.

Symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Chronic bad breath
  • Swollen, painful, bleeding gums
  • Sensitivity
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth

What causes gum disease?

The short answer is bacteria, which is something that our mouths are full of. Bacteria sits in a sticky pool of mucus and particles, otherwise called plaque. Regular brushing and flossing helps flush plaque out but once it hardens to become a cement-like substance called tartar, it takes a professional dentist or dental hygienist and specialized tools to remove it.

Who gets gum disease?

Gum disease can have hidden effects until a person is well into their 30s or 40s. It is rare for teenagers to develop periodontitis, but they will develop a precursor to gum disease, called gingivitis. While men get gum disease more often than women, it can occur anywhere that plaque can develop under the gum line.
